Buffalo Sabres jerseys Team Canada Is Back In The
Near the end of the third period, the fanatical Canada Hockey Place was chanting at the top of their lungs ///ldquo;We Want Russia.///rdquo; And judging by their performance Tuesday evening, Team Canada does too.
In their most important game of the tournament, Team Canada brought their best effort to defeat a helpless German squad 8-2. As a result, Canada is awarded with a quarterfinal match-up Wednesday night (7:30 EST, CTV) with the powerful Team Russia.
There was no mistaking this as Canada///rsquo;s strongest performance of the tournament thus far. From the drop of the opening face-off, Canada asserted their will on a team with only five NHL players, and one goaltender.
The new line combinations that Head Coach Mike Babcock fabricated for the first elimination game proved to be beneficial. Sidney Crosby centered a new line with wingers Eric Staal and Jarome Iginla. As a result, the line produced three goals, two by Iginla.
///ldquo;I thought we did a good job; controlled the puck down low when we wanted to,///rdquo; said Crosby of his new line mates.
There were no weaknesses to Canada///rsquo;s game on this night. No glaring mistakes, no odd-man rushes, no turnovers. They implemented their game plan for the entire 60 minutes, controlling the play, getting traffic in front of the net, and getting as many pucks as possible to the net. Canada finished with 39 shots.
A proverbial monkey was removed from the back of forward Rick Nash, who was demoted from the first line, to a threesome with Anaheim Ducks Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf. He responded with a third period goal ///ndash; the first of his Olympic career ///ndash; and a rush that resulted in a penalty shot. However, Babcock elected to have Crosby take the shot, who was not successful.
Possibly the most assuring news was in the Canadian goal. Roberto Luongo stopped 21 of 23 shots to get the win. Above all else, Luongo provided Team Canada with a sense of stability that they hadn///rsquo;t felt with Martin Brodeur.
Joe Thornton, Shea Weber, Mike Richards, Crosby, and Captain Scott Neidermeyer contributed goals in the victory. Eric Staal, who was promoted to the first line, pitched in three assists.
Canada does not have time to celebrate though, as they will be right back to action Wednesday night against the arch-rival Russia. In yet another win-or-go-home game, Team Canada must be alert and ready to face their toughest challenge yet.
///ldquo;It///rsquo;s going to be a great challenge,///rdquo; said Crosby. ///ldquo;We all know the rivalry; we all know how intense it///rsquo;s going to be.///rdquo;
The talent on the Russian team has been well documented. From the NHL///rsquo;s reigning Most Valuable Player Alexander Ovechkin, to last year///rsquo;s leading scorer in 2008-joe sakic team canada jersey,rick nash team canada jersey,ugg upside tall boots, Evgeni Malkin, the ability is endless.
The team certainly presents a difficult match-up, but based on the way Team Canada played Tuesday night, they are more than ready for the challenge.
